Maria Luisa Bernal Elio
RAF? To Louis the? O BERNAL
(1926-2009)
"In those days it happened, I was still very young, what
I would be as a child by now, if indeed I have left
to be. And then there was something in the streets, something in the
houses, which disappeared after the war,
the war that I still see the roofs of houses,
war which appeared one day in the cry of the
woman. "
Maria Luisa Elio.
A GIRL'S VOICE OF THE GUERRAMaría Luisa Elio-Pamplona native, is the author of the original idea, root-autobiographical, the script for In the empty balcony (1962), the most important work of her husband, poet, writer and filmmaker Jomier Garcia Ascot, written in collaboration with Emilio Garcia Riera (ibicense also in exile). The film dedicated to "the Spanish Dead in exile", described in intimate tone and pathetic at the same time the experiences and memories of Gabriela (Maria Luisa Elio), recalling his childhood and the sudden outbreak of the Spanish war in his life, seven years old. Recreating the subjectivity of a fragmentary perceptions (the sudden disappearance of his father, the leakage through the woods from the Republican Nationalist Spain, news of the shooting of the father, the family arrived in southern France and exile to Mexico ). In the empty balcony won the Critics Prize at the Locarno Film Festival and Giano d'Oro in the Latin American Film Festival on Sestri-Levante.
The actress, writer and cultural promoter Elio Maria Luisa Bernal was born in Pamplona on August 17, 1926 and died in Coyoacán, Mexico City, on July 17, 2009. His father, Luis Elio, municipal judge, president of one of the mixed juries and man left, the day after the military uprising of General Franco, was arrested at his home, with his wife and daughters, two policemen and two Falangists . He spent the war hiding in a house, sometimes staying in a closet and even his family came to take for dead. Was reunited with his wife and daughters in Paris, where continued into exile, traveling to Mexico in February 1940. There, Maria Luisa Elio relates exiled intellectuals and Emilio Prados, Luis Buñuel, García Jomier Ascot, and with Mexicans, as Octavio Paz, Carlos Fuentes, Juan Rulfo and Salvador Elizondo. He studied theater at the Academy of Seki Sano, participating in the group Poetry Out Loud and works in newspapers and magazines, as the supplement of the Journal News and the University. He also writes short stories, screenplays and works on Mexican television and in several films.
Accompanies her husband on his trip to Cuba, where Garcia Ascot would shoot two of the five episodes of the film under History of the Revolution (A working day and boyfriends). The two episodes filmed, together with New Year, by Jorge Fraga, compose the film Cuba 58 (1962), one of the most significant of the new Cuban cinema.
The Nobel Prize Gabriel García Márquez spent his internationally renowned novel One Hundred Years of Solitude to marriage, with this simple inscription: "A Jomier Garcia and Maria Luisa Elio Ascot."
Maria Luisa Elio returns to Pamplona, in the summer of 1970, accompanied by his son Diego, seven years old. In the experiences, nostalgia and memories that came on this trip should mourn his novel Time (1988). "I remember everything, the writer says, 'I remember it as if the weather had broken and the pieces do not fit as each other." Later, as the culmination of that trip publishes Note Pad (1995).
In exile, the girl became a woman's war, not to remember their homeland, and when reunited after so many years, he exclaims: "And now I realize that is going back."
