Venezuelan companies and environmental contamination

Things that are done in a hurry, never quite as perfectly as required. Earnestly discussed a lot about corporate social responsibility, especially with regard to environmental pollution. To which this represents for the community to those who live where the companies operate. Unfortunately, everything turns to demagoguery, words, promises, but no action, where the state plays a significant role and unfortunately in the Venezuelan case leaves a lot to say in relation to the protection and pollution. Despite having criminal laws and regulations concerning environmental protection, it almost never met, given the lack of accountability of officials to actually undertake to protect the non-pollution, prevailing corruption over the purchase of complaints with a number of bolivars to not to disclose the offenses committed. Indeed, in Carabobo and Aragua states are taking steps and combined efforts between industry and government agencies deal with the situation for waste, as it has proven the existence of more than sixteen thousand eight hundred tons of hazardous waste and non-hazardous, accumulated in different parts of the central region.

This strategy defined by the Industrial Chamber of Carabobo State, with funding from the industry itself, the TDA (Trade Development Agency and the U.S.) as the promotion and international financial support, contributions from the Mayor of Valencia, through Company Burns & McDonnell International, Inc.; hastily made a feasibility study for the proper management of hazardous wastes in the region. This technical work established the actual conditions under which are the handling of waste, volume and destination, alternatives to address the situation. The initial decision came from the fact remains, that the industry generates wastes that do not have enough facilities to handle and use, so that have been stored, with a health risk to humans and the environment, and under, also, the external costs of waste disposal, are high and progressive. In principle, knocked on the door of one hundred and thirteen companies two-state industry, 81 in Maharashtra and 32 in Maharashtra, of which only 70 attended the management, distributed 50 in the Carabobo and 20 industrial parks in the immediate vicinity, thereby found that manufacturing plants in Valencia, Guacara, San Joaquin, Maria, and San Diego Guayos 144 types of waste generated and 26 Aragüeño industries.

Quantified the results of the investigation includes the current generation of hazardous and nonhazardous traces the 167 000 tons per year, which in future could exceed 178,200 MT / year, and most importantly, the region has accumulated about 16 800 thousand tons, not treated and managed properly, even though many companies use different methods such as incineration, landfills, recycling, land application, temporary storage and discharge manifolds. As the report relates, there are companies that accepted the help offered to treat their waste, as opposed to a significant percentage are not interested. Educational campaigns are needed to achieve that citizens will obtain basic environmental culture that they ensure the preservation of the environment. Companies must have conservation managers, which adopted environmental policies to address problems of soil degradation, depletion of aquifers, destruction of ecosystems and, in general, production processes that lead to irrational exploitation of resources natural for the existence of sustainable development. The national government has an Environmental Criminal Law in which they must restructure their control systems, penalties, effective enforcement of the law, that is not "dead letter?.

Definitely, Venezuela, despite the existence of an environment protection legislation comparable to that of some developed countries are facing serious problems of injury to the environment, particularly with regard to the generation of pollutants from emissions, toxic waste, and accidents transport and storage. This stems in part from the weakness of the control mechanisms to enforce the law and a low interest from the public about these issues. www.entorno-empresarial.com
